Arnold Newman

                                             Arnold Newman was acknowledged as the "pioneer of the environmental portrait". An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject's usual environment. In each of his photographs the subject is an environment. Some of Newman's portraits seem more staged than natural while others look completely natural. For example, the photo above on the left looks completely natural, while the photo on the right looks very staged. In the photo on the right the only thing that is visible in the rectangle of light and the head of the man inside of it.      The photo on the right attracted me to it because of it's simplicity. Bieke Depoorter

  The photographer I chose from the Magnum Photos website is Bieke Depoorter. Bieke Depoorter became a nominee from Magnum Photos at just 25 years old. Depoorter took many photos with people. In the photo above it looks like a group of friends or a family in a car driving past trees with lights on them. In the picture below there is a woman looking out a window and in front of her there is a model town, with people, buildings, and trees, that is lit up. Bieke Depoorter has several more photographs on the website and each one of them says something about the people that are in them. I think Depoorter's photographs are incredibly interesting and I like the work she has done that can be seen on the Magnum Photos website.

What Photography Means To Me

 Photography is different for everyone. To me photography is a way to remember parts of life that I never want to forget. If you were to ask people what a good photograph is, you're unlikely to get the same answer twice. Marvin Heiferman used the example of a food stylist and a fashion photographer would both have different idea for a good photograph. Everyone has a different meaning for photography. For some people photography is a hobby, and for some people it is a job. Photography has been used by many different people to help express their thoughts and feelings about different topics. Photography can be used to capture the best moments in life, in a way so no one will forget them.
