Arnold Newman
Arnold Newman was acknowledged as the "pioneer of the environmental portrait". An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject's usual environment. In each of his photographs the subject is an environment. Some of Newman's portraits seem more staged than natural while others look completely natural. For example, the photo above on the left looks completely natural, while the photo on the right looks very staged. In the photo on the right the only thing that is visible in the rectangle of light and the head of the man inside of it.
The photo on the right attracted me to it because of it's simplicity. It has a few overhead lights and one long rectangle of light, and then the man inside of it. This photo does not seem as natural as many of Newman's other photographs but it is still an interesting portrait.
These photos inspired me to try to take photographs of people in their natural environment. I wanted my portraits to seem as natural as possible. Arnold Newman did a lot of amazing work and I personally really enjoy his way of taking environmental portraits.
