Arnold Newman

Image
Arnold Newman was acknowledged as the "pioneer of the environmental portrait". An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject's usual environment. In each of his photographs the subject is an environment. Some of Newman's portraits seem more staged than natural while others look completely natural. For example, the photo above on the left looks completely natural, while the photo on the right looks very staged. In the photo on the right the only thing that is visible in the rectangle of light and the head of the man inside of it.      The photo on the right attracted me to it because of it's simplicity. It has a few overhead lights and one long rectangle of light, and then the man inside of it. This photo does not seem as natural as many of Newman's other photographs but it is still an interesting portrait.      These photos inspired me to try to take photographs of people in their natural environme

The first quote I liked was "The digital photograph can also be said to represent a single moment, but one that can be easily lengthened and amplified by joining it to many other moments through various forms of hyperlinks and hybrid media, including extending it as a movie". I haven't thought about movies as an extension of a photograph before. I often think about how photographs are used to remember a single moment, now I will see movies in a similar light.      The second quote I liked was "Much of digital photography will not be, as it is now, reactive but will try to anticipate and deal with potential issues rather than waiting for them to happen and recording their existence". I liked this quote because it discusses a possible future use for digital photography. Rather than have things like security cameras that would just record the events, we would have cameras that would, in a way, predict the problems and so we would be able to deal with them bef

Annie Leibovitz

Image
The picture above was taken by Annie Leibovitz. The subject of the photo is David Beckham as Prince Phillip. This picture is a part of a series of photos of celebrities as Disney characters. I think that this picture along with all the other photos in the series are amazing well done. The fire on the shield and in front of the horse looks well edited. The castle in the background adds a nice detail to the shot. Beckham's pose on the back of the horse adds a sense of action to the scene as well. Overall, this is a great photograph among many others done by Annie Leibovitz.

Christopher Bucklow

Image
I found the pictures taken by Christopher Bucklow incredibly interesting. I like the way the colors completely cover the figure and make them appear to be glowing. His photography is unique to me because I haven't seen anything like it before. Like his work Tretrarch 10-55 am , and other similar works are amazing to me. I like how it looks like the person is made of a thousand suns, and that the color continues beyond just the figure to make them appear to be glowing. I hope to see more work by Bucklow because of how much I admire the ones we saw in class.
